What age do kids need to be to join WORD?

Participants need to be a minimum age of 7 years old to take part in WORD programmes. Our programmes are grouped into three age ranges: 7-9, 10-12 and 13-17.

Do you offer classes or camps for under 7s?

WORD does not currently offer classes, camps or term programmes for riders under 7. We find kids over 7 have the emotional maturity and resilience to last the session and relate well to their peers.

Do we need to own a mountain bike?

You need your own mountain bike with two working brakes for all WORD programmes. Bikes must be suitable for off-road riding and in safe working condition. If you are unsure whether your child's bike is suitable, get in touch with the WORD team.

Are WORD coaches qualified and police-vetted?

All WORD instructors are police vetted, safety checked and first aid trained, and must complete our instructor training camp. Instructors may also hold external qualifications such as the GSMBC.

Do you offer scholarships or subsidies?

WORD does not offer scholarships or subsidies at this stage. We do have payment plans available - get in touch with the WORD team to find out how we can help.

What happens if there is an incident or minor injury during a session?

Our instructors log every incident and we always follow up with you directly afterwards.

Do you offer lessons for adults, or just kids?

Our core focus is youth programmes. For adult coaching we can point you toward Nic Johnson MTB Coach in Wellington or Jamie at New Zealand Mountain Biking in Rotorua.

Can WORD mentor my child for an award like the Duke of Edinburgh?

Yes. We are happy to work with young people in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Our Assistant / Future ForWORD programme develops them as leaders and provides volunteer hours.

Can my teen get involved beyond the regular programmes?

Yes. We regularly run teen-specific opportunities such as trail dig crews, bring-a-friend days and teen meetups. Keep an eye on our newsletter and emails for dates.
